Case study – Sophie’s story
Sophie joined the National Citizen Service (NCS) summer programme in August of 2013. During their social action project Sophie and her team supported The Centrepiece Church, Ashford by cleaning and redecorating both the interior and exterior to make it a more enjoyable and pleasant place for the community to visit. Sophie grew in confidence and self-belief in her ability to work within a team, and discovered her capability to lead one too.
Thanks to her positive experience with NCS, Sophie graduated from the programme and expressed her interest in being more involved with CXK. After presenting to the board and proving her commitment she was made a youth trustee, taking the responsibility to represent the thoughts and opinions of young people involved in the scheme.
Sophie became involved in all aspects of CXK. She became an assistant team leader on the NCS autumn 2014 programme where she used her previous experience to support other young people make the most of their opportunity. She also co-chaired a safeguarding conference in November 2014 and represented young people in the bid for prime contractor for the National Citizen Service programme in London. Sophie’s confidence grew further and she was recently appointed the Chair of the youth board where even more opportunities and responsibilities await.
The Youth Board
Every year a brand new bunch of grads from across the Kent and Sussex graduate community are brought together to form the NCS Youth Board. As a member of the Youth Board, you get to share your thoughts on everything from the assemblies you’ve seen in school right through the graduation ceremonies you’ve attended, helping to shape the way NCS is delivered.
There are only 15 spaces available on our Youth Board each year and the grads who are successful in their application are given the platform to build their contacts and experience whilst leaving a lasting legacy on the NCS programme.
Applications open August 17- October 17 (Dates TBC). Check back here to apply.
